The quality assurance system of the university blood band at Heidelberg at the department for immunology realises a concept for quality assurance in transfusion medicine developed at this department in 1994/1995 (1,2) it is based on the components "quality of structure", "quality of process" and "quality of outcome". The intern standards are defined on the basis of national law and guidelines (extern standarys) for every aspect of structure, process and outcome; they are specified in written form by standard operating procedures (SOP).
