The technologies and practices that have enabled the recent boom in shale gas production in the United States (U.S.) have focused attention on the environmental impacts of its use.Water quality issues include potential contamination of ground and surface water and the implications of vast water use required by hydrofracking.Air pollution issues include emissions of conventional pollutants from local drilling activities and increased truck travel in populated areas.
