Both the books under review are addressed to policymakers insofar as they seek to advocate approaches to the resolution of conflict on the basis of their analysis of case studies. They might both be characterised as 'lessons of books, except that Bew, Frampton and Gurruchaga are mainly concerned that governments have been learning the wrong lessons from the Northern Irish peace process. Both the policy and ideological agendas of the authors affect their analysis quite profoundly, so it is worth stating these at the outset. Sisk uses his case studies to promote the notion of what he calls 'powerful peacemaking' (p. 187), encompassing coercive diplomacy.
