Alternative solutions in Walmer's Sakhasonke Village

Government-subsidised housing for the lowest-income band (R0 - R1 500 per month) presents very specific challenges to the built environment industry. As civil engineers we are expected to provide sustainable services to low-income housing developments at reduced fees and in record time. When Engineering Advice and Services (EAS) were approached by Messrs Metroplan, Town Planners, to assist with the development of a maximum number of erven on an unused caravan park site, specific challenges were presented. It was these challenges that led to innovative thoughts and serious negotiations with the local authority to accept an alternative solution to the norm.
