Reversing the past: Mining legislation and socio-economic development

The Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act (Act 28 of 2002) came into operation on 1 May 2004, along with the Broad-based Socio-economic Empowerment Charter for the Mining Industry and its accompanying scorecard. Together, these instruments will have far-reaching effects on an industry burdened with a history rooted in South Africa's colonial and apartheid eras.
