Throughout his long and distinguished career, Henry Petroski, Ph.D., P.E., Dist.M.ASCE, has tackled a wide variety of subjects. His takes on such everyday objects as books, the pencil, and even the toothpick have served as jumping-off points for broader and grander discussions of the evolution of objects and the history of engineering. But the subject to which Petroski returns time and again is failure, in particular, failure's integral place within the engineering design process. This should come as no surprise once we recall that Petroski doesn't just write about engineering; he is himself an engineer and his area of expertise is failure analysis.
