Overexploitation of groundwater resources in coastal regions is a wide-spread phenomenon, especially in arid and in semi-arid regions, which may lead to deterioration and abandonment of coastal aquifers, due to saltwater intrusion. Development of mathematical and numerical models to describe fresh and salt water flow and to optimise groundwater development systems is essential for the protection and sustainable use of coastal aquifers. In this paper, we present applications of two different models that predict saltwater penetration in a coastal region, due to the operation of a production well.
