A Range of Power Supplies for Hollow-State Guitar Amplifiers

Since the introduction of hollow-state guitar amplifiers by George Beauchamp in the late 1920s, several types of power supplies have been used. The least expensive ones had no power transformer. Somewhat better, higher-powered models used a power transformer feeding a half-wave tube rectifier. Moving up in quality and power, we find a change to full-wave rectifiers. Beginning in the late 1950s, amplifier manufacturers began to change from tube rectifiers to solid-state diodes. Let's look at some of the power-supply circuits that amplifier makers have used along the way.
