摘要

Historians of modern missions long have acknowledged the watershedncharacter of the World Missionary Conference in Edinburgh in 1910. YetnBrian Stanley insists that the common interpretation of it, as the seedbed ofnthe ecumenical movement, is much too thin. Inter-church relations were verynmuch part of the conversation, Stanley acknowledges, but we should recallnthat Edinburgh 1910 was a missions conference, first and foremost. Thenecumenical outcome was in some ways a surprise, given that in order tonsecure widespread support, conference organizers had to promise that itnwould address no major issues of church polity or ecclesiology.
