DREDGING PSYCHOTHERAPY: ITS RELATIONSHIP WITH TRADITIONAL CHINESE CULTURE AND ANCIENT CHINESE MEDICINE

Psychotherapy in China has a long history, but a relatively short period of development in modern time. Many psychological ideas and principles of psychotherapy which can fully represent the psychotherapeutic functions were found in traditional Chinese cultures and works of philosophy of as early as 2 000 years ago. Apart from the diagnosing and curing of physical diseases, ancient Chinese medicine attached great importance to the interaction between one's physical condition and mental condition. Researches into the causes of psychological disorders and conditions and cures of psychotherapy have proven to be fruitful. However, it is only sixty years ago that psychotherapy was studied and developed as an independent school of science in China. Since the 1930s, psychiatrists and psychologists in China have been making great efforts in exploring the approach of psychotherapy with Chinese characteristics, of which, Dredging Psychotherapy, formed by the end of the 1980s, is the most representative achievement.
