Creating an Academic Career in Respiratory Medicine: Take-Home Messages From a Unique Symposium

On November 19, 2006, on the occasion of then11th Congress of the Asia Pacific Society ofnRespirology (Kyoto, Japan), a unique symposium onnCreating an Academic Career in Respiratory Medi-ncine was held. For the first time in the history ofninternational medical publishing, a group of editors-nin-chief representing a single medical specialty, innthis case respiratory medicine, was invited to comentogether to talk about different aspects of medicalnpublishing in the international literature and tonsubsequently discuss these issues directly with par-nticipants. Such lively interactive communication withnthe audience and among the editors further in-ncreased the value of this already unique and specialnsymposium. The participants were Dr. EdwardnAbraham (Editor-in-Chief of American Journal ofnRespiratory and Critical Care Medicine or “BluenJournal”), Dr. Richard Irwin (Editor-in-Chief ofnCHEST), Dr. Klaus Rabe (Editor-in-Chief of Euro-npean Respiratory Journal), and Dr. Philip Thompsonn(Editor-in-Chief of Respirology). The symposiumnwas chaired by Professor J. Patrick Barron of thenInternational Medical Communications Center,nTokyo Medical University, Japan.
