As a process that effectively removes inorganic and non-volatile organic compounds dissolved in waste water, evaporation is an ideal method of treatment for many industrial effluent streams. Water of excellent quality can be recovered, reducing the need for additional process water and the volume requiring further treatment. In the past, evaporation has been underutilized in the treatment of industrial effluents because of the high capital and operational costs of the technology. Now, however, with tighter discharge regulations and the higher price of raw and make-up process water, and at the same time the greater cost-effectiveness of the new evaporation technology, many industries are finding the evaporation of industrial effluents a viable option. Applications in the forest industry, food industry, metal surface treatment industry and landfill leachate treatment are looking very promising.
