Four years ago, a well-known actor was riding a horse when he fell, breaking two vertebrae in his neck. The damage was devastating. The actor, known largely for his role as Superman, was left with no feeling or movement from the neck down. Yet Christopher Reeve set himself a goal to recover full control of his body within the next ten years. To achieve his aim will take more than just Hollywood bravado though. What is needed is a vast leap in our understanding of the science of spinal injuries.
