Professional registration provides a credential documenting that an engineer has demonstrated a basic understanding of engineering fundamentals and has practiced in the field of engineering for a minimum amount of time, usually four years. However, the one-time demonstration of knowledge via testing is a recognized shortcoming of the Professional Engineer (PE) credential. The testing approach is, at best, an indication that an individual's knowledge is "satisfactory" at a given point in time.
