Chemical compatibility is, of course, the first issue in selecting materials of construction for a chemical process industries (CPI) plant. In addition to the operational process conditions per se, this step also should look at downtime conditions, possible chemical upsets, startup and shutdown, and cleaning operations. Beyond these chemical considerations, however, there are further issues that determine how successful the selection will be. These issues involve exploring specific service problems. Let us assume that a material of construction has been selected for a piece of equipment. The next step is to assess the material's service implications, including a possible failure.
