Still a fledgling scientific organization in 1948, the Stanford Research Institute received a commission to do its first chemistry project: determine the cause of the smog choking the Los Angeles Basin. After careful study, the scientists reached a conclusion: automobiles were not a contributing factor. Today, longtime SRI employees chuckle at this apparent scientific naivete.
