BP, AMOCO TO MERGE

British Petroleum (BP) and Amoco are combining operations in the largest industrial merger to date. The nearly $50 billion transaction will create the world's third largest—based on income and market capitalization— oil, gas, and chemical producer after Royal Dutch/Shell and Exxon, and one nearly twice as large as those in the next tier of companies. The new company, BP Amoco plc, will have annual sales of about $108 billion.
