A new ferrocenyl bithiophenic polymer has enabled the first demonstration of internally referenced quantitative analysis of charge-transfer reactions, which may enable better understanding and applications of conducting polymers in e.g. supercapacitors.rnThe peculiar charge-transfer reaction in conducting polymers results in interesting properties such as large pseudo-capacitance and converse piezoelectric effect, leading to applications in electrochemical capacitors and actuators. Thus, the amount of charge, a, transferred to or from each monomer unit (or the reciprocal of the number of monomer units to donate or accept one electron) in the polymer is of both theoretical and practical importance.
