Zeolitic cages of the AST type are found in the novel scandium-squarate MOF, and the joining of them gives rise to a new binodal network with a unique topology; this new material is an efficient heterogeneous Lewis acid catalyst.During the past few years, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have received a great attention since they are proving to be a very attractive type of materials due to their potential applications in several fields such as gas storage, heterogeneous catalysis or for optical applications. In recent years, great efforts have been made for the rational synthesis of this type of compounds. Following the reticular chemistry approach, specific organic and inorganic units, with predefined geometric characteristics, are employed to obtain predesigned secondary building blocks, with the aim of obtaining networks with preferred features, and therefore, desired properties. In the current work, we have selected an organic ligand, the squarate dianion, with a well defined geometry.
