For years, even decades, many economists have claimed that rising inequality is something a market economy can generate while still being just and efficient-sometimes even more efficient. In recent years, inequality has been related not merely to economic and social injustice but also to physical and emotional maladies. In this article, the author discusses how inequality might also be reducing civic participation, a cornerstone of democracy.
