If you're somewhat hazy about the basic scientific research done by the U.S. government, you're not alone. The best remedy is to read The Entrepreneurial State. Mariana Mazzucato was born in Rome in 1948 and was brought to the United States by her parents three years later when her father was appointed professor of physics at Princeton. She spent most of her younger years studying in the U.S. and taught at several American universities before going to Sussex as a professor of science and technology. She is a much-admired founder or leading member of various European commissions on government's role in fostering basic technological research.
