Ari Shavit (pronounced ShaVEET) was born in 1957 in the city of Rehovot, Israel. As a boy he felt fear, fear which continues to this day. Twelve wars and two intifadas by Palestinian paramilitary forces have taken place during his lifetime. Who will win? No one. He never lost his fear for the future of Israel. As a paratrooper in the Israel Defense Forces, he discovered a devastating fact. The Israelis were breaking into Palestinian homes in the middle of the night, pulling young men out of their beds for interrogation. In detention camps the young men screamed under torture. The IDF violently broke up Palestinian demonstrations. Why were Israelis oppressing another people? Why was democratic Israel acting like a colonizer? Can't we find a way to solve these problems?
