After the January-February issue of Challenge went to press, the Charlie Hebdo cartoonists were murdered by terrorists in Paris and Putin sent troops into eastern Ukraine. What to do? Charlie Hebdo cartoonists operated under the mantle of free speech. But we cannot cry Free speech! Free speech! no matter what the consequences. Free speech does not cover racism, anti-Semitism, anti-Muslimism, or any other anti-people-ism because this kind of free speech is regarded as inhumane by the insulted, and should be regarded as inhumane by all of us who want to be humane.
