The Business of Changing Minds: Returning the Collective Agency of Government to Its Proper Economic Role

The Great Pandemic of 2020 ripped the bandages that have been barely binding our economy together, to expose the festering underemployment on which it was hobbling along. My Job Quality Index research, with Jeff Ferry, Robert C. Hockett and Amir Khaleghi and that of others had preciously revealed the degree to which the private sector has been generating an increasingly disproportionate volume of low-wage/low hours jobs, which more and more American workers were force to settle for over the past 30 years. But it was only with the COVID-19 crisis lockdown that we saw tens of millions of workers in such low quality jobs virtually erased overnight-with the strange outcome being that average hours worked and average hourly wages, and hence weekly incomes, for the workers who remained on the job, skyrocket.
