The industry's three major pub-licly traded smart card vendors reported significant growth in sales and rare increases in prices for the industry's major product, subscriber identity module cards, for the second quarter. The financial results point to a continued return to health for the industry's major vendors and also an apparent change in strategy. France-based Gemplus International, the largest vendor in terms of revenue, credits rising sales of SIM cards for mobile phones with the revenue gains. Sales of SIMs and related products increased by 42% with unit volume up by just over 40% to 59.6 million SIMs. It helped Gemplus realize its secondly quarterly profit in a row, a significant milestone after three years of steady losses.
