In Japan, where consumers carry around wads of cash, a few well-publicized cases of ATM fraud in recent years created more than a little concern among banks and consumers. Several banks decided to provide extra security for their ATM cards, and, given that some cardholders still are permitted to withdraw up to thousands of dollars worth of yen at a time, the banks are going beyond chip cards to secure their cash machines with biometrics.
