Governments around the world plan to issue mil-lions of electronic pass-ports this year as they race to meet deadlines set by the European Union and the United States. They expect the travel documents to work at border checkpoints worldwide, whether in Singapore or San Francisco. But while the new e-pass-ports will be tested to meet international standards before they reach citizens' pockets, many believe more needs to be done to ensure worldwide interoperability.
