As the closures resulting from the winter storms come to an end (with the Anderton and Bunbury stoppages lifted in time for the late spring holiday, and just the Aire & Calder breach still to repair - see page 7) it's now the turn of hot summer weather to impact the canals. In addition to the water supply issues listed on this page, the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal has seen swingbridges taken out of use during the hottest part of the day from 1pm to prevent themjamming due to heat expansion. The Canal & River Trust said it planned remedial works to reduce the frequency of these closures.
