A freight forwarder goes insolvent with a carrier's bill outstanding. The shipper had already paid the freight forwarder, but the payment never made it into the carrier's hand, leading the carrier to knock on the shipper's door. Will the shipper have to pay again? Will the car-rier get stiffed? It's an ugly scenario and, unfortunately, an increasingly common one as the reces-sion and anemic recovery have left many transportation industry players on shaky foundations. But knowing a little about the law as it pertains to transportation and logis-tics can go a long way to at least making you aware of potential legal pitfalls in such situ-ations. To that end, CITT included a session entitled "Legal Road Map" to help supply chain professionals steer clear of such legal minefields at its recent annual conference in Vancouver.
