This book begins with a letter sent to Lieutenant-Colonel Allison Borden, commanding officer of the Nova Scotia Highlanders, to schoolchildren in the province. Seeking their help in raising 3,500 men for the Overseas Highland Brigade and dated 14 February 1916, it claims that if the young people don't encourage their fathers and brothers to join up, "the Germans may come to Nova Scotia and take or destroy our farms and houses." The brigade sailed from Halifax on the SS Olympic on 12 October 1916.
