The Department of Statistics in the University of Calcutta was started by a great visionary, nurtured during its formative years by a band of dedicated scholars, guided subsequently by some illustrious teachers and a few eminent research workers, and is currently moving forward with a dozen of devoted teachers who have established themselves in their respective fields of research. The Calcutta Statistical Association has a more or less similar tale to tell. Starting with a handful of enthusiasts as the founder-members, the Association has now around three hundred members among teachers, research workers and professionals in this country and abroad. Activities of the Association have increased manifold over the years, beginning with publication of a journal styled as Calcutta Statistical Association Bulletin, through organization of lecture meetings to holding international triennial Calcutta Symposia on Probability and Statistics. This noticeable growth of the Association owes primarily to a small but dedicated band of workers-quite a few of them being faculty members in the Department of Statistics of the Calcutta University-who shared all the burden of running the activities of the Association, attending to minute details and striving to maintain a high standard of performance. They worked hard and enjoyed working for the Association. Some of them served the Association in different capacities, never bothering about the offices being held but constantly vigilant about their responsibilities as members of the Council or the Board of Directors.
