I spent most of the 1990s living in Eastern Europe, so I learned to pack miniature screw- drivers, needle-nose pliers, and a half-dozen different phone jacks and electrical adapters along with my toothbrush. Why? To make sure I could connect my laptop anywhere, from Bucharest to Berlin. The first order of business in any hotel room was to climb under the desk, unscrew the phone from the wall, and figure out a way to hook up my computer. If there were any problems, I was pretty much on my own.
