For decades, Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd.'s status as Hong Kong's flagship carrier fueled its growth until it became the largest international airline in Asia. But the dramatic expansion of air traffic directly in and out of business centers across China-bypassing Hong Kong-has chipped away at Cathay's once-lucrative role as the main conduit for travel to the mainland. Worse, China's decision to build its three state-controlled airlines into major global carriers presents Cathay with large, lower-cost rivals not only for flights to the mainland, but also for long-haul travel to a host of destinations globally.
