By launching its first ten 12m long, three-axle Volvo B7Ls with their air-conditioned 95-seat East Lanes Nordic bodies, First Glasgow is challenging the assumption that double-deckers have no long-term role outside London. It's an assumption that's been hard to refute until now, for despite notable exceptions like Travel West Midlands, Lothian and Dublin Bus, with around 750 between them, there are far more low-floor double-deckers in London than in the rest of the British Isles. In just over four years, the major London fleets have accumulated over 2,500 Dennis Tridents, Volvo B7TLs and DAF DB250s, yet the same groups that each have several hundred in London make only limited use of them elsewhere.
