In December 2002 You Write, Neil Pollard highlighted my almost robotic linking of 'tatty' with 'bus station' in my Scottish extravaganza article. As I continue to drift around the country researching for these columns, I encounter bus stations regularly and many are still horrible. But not all. The new one in Horsham is pretty good. One's only possible moan is its distance from most facilities but, helpfully, it does tell you where and how far away they are — phone 5m, tourist information 10m, library/Citizens' Advice Bureau 65m, shops 100m, toilets 150m, taxis 500m. Yes, it's a strange hierarchy, I like Leeds's facility and have commented on it before. I was back there in March and plenty of others, like Wolverhampton's which saw me in August, function pretty well. Even iconic Preston bus station — soldiering on under sentence of death — was clean enough and offering varied facilities on another March visit.
