I was sorry to read in Buses last month of the death of Werner Heubeck, one of the most charismatic figures in the UK bus industry, and enjoyed Irvine Millar's affectionate and informative tribute.rnBefore deregulation, the concept of a major bus company consistendy running at a profit without revenue support was almost unheard of. Indeed that was one of the concerns we had here at Buses in the lead-up to privatisation, especially with the thought of revenue being split between competing operators: how could big bus companies possibly survive in the private sector? So there was a time when bus and coach journalists were trotting across the Irish Sea to see how it could be done.
