Deregulation and privatisation changed the sorts of buses operators bought in their immediate aftermath, though there was no such thing as a standard deregulation bus. It was one more event that added to the great grief caused to a manufacturing industry already shaken badly by a downturn in demand for new vehicles. Biggest of these had been the end of new bus grant, which had been conceived as a temporary measure in 1968 to accelerate the introduction of one-person operation and was not phased out until 1980-84. With the government meeting half of the cost of most new buses built throughout the 1970s, it distorted demand by encouraging many operators to replace rather than refurbish their fleets, creating such a balloon in demand for new buses that extra manufacturing capacity was created partly by encouraging additional manufacturers to enter the market.
