The UK bus industry has a huge public profile: buses currently carry nearly 70% of all public transport passengers in the UK. The Department for Transport states that the industry has a total patronage of 5.2 billion journeys a year in Great Britain and employs an estimated 170,000 people. In many areas, the local bus company is one of the largest local employers.
