These days, Mark Savelli represents a rarity in Hong Kong: a senior expatriate British manager in one of the former British territory's bus companies. The buses - especially double-deckers - may still be recognisable UK designs, but British influence in the boardrooms has dwindled since Hong Kong returned to Chinese control in 1997 to become a Special Administrative Region (SAR). Interspersed by periods running some of First's UK operations - mainly in Scotland - Savelli has done the full set of Hong Kong operators since starting out with Citybus in 1991. Today he is transport development director at Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB), which with almost 4,000 vehicles - the vast majority three-axle double-deckers - is by far the largest.
