A 1986 Maidstone & District Leyland Olympian commuter coach was among the restorations making their rally debut at the South East Bus Festival on 2 April. ECW-bodied 5454 (C454 GKE) is the latest restoration of an Olympian by Swindon-based Dave Rogers whose collection includes examples from Hong Kong and Singapore. It was one of 14 similar 11m Olympian coaches that M&D bought between 1983 and 1986 for its Invictaway services between the Medway Towns and London. In all, ECW built 45 to this design for National Bus Company subsidiaries. M&D's were to the more common overall height of 14ft 2in (4.3m). Faversham-based South East Coachworks used the event to unveil two Park Royal-bodied double-deckers it has been restoring. Work on M&D DL39 (VKR 39), a 1956 AEC Regent V with lowbridge side sunken gangway body, has been completed for owner Paul Baker, who repatriated it from Austria where he discovered it in use as a McDonald's playbus.
