LAST DAYS OF CASH

The days when bus conductors were employed to sell tickets and wear leather bags that filled up with low value coins have all but gone from our roads and if many who manage the industry have their way, so too will cash as a way of paying a fare. Transport for London has long gone cashless and the rapid adoption of contactless and mobile phone payment should greatly reduce the volume of cash - coinage especially - circulating in the industry. Provided the new technology can handle the transactions quickly enough - a letter we publish this month suggests once again that some ITSO compliant cards slow down the boarding process - then passengers will benefit from journeys no longer delayed while somebody fumbles through pockets, purses or wallets for cash and the driver then counts change.
