Avon blames Merseytravel for decision to close

Wirral independent Avon Buses ceased operations on 5 October, saying it can no longer absorb losses and citing PTE Merseytravel's My Ticket for youth travel as the final straw. The Prenton-based operator started as a minibus operator in 1981, began operating full-size buses after winning a Merseytravel tendered service contract in 1987 and grew to operate tendered and commercial routes across the Wirral peninsula and a few other parts of Merseyside. It latterly operated 32 of them, and in the immediate aftermath of the sudden closure Arriva provided limited replacements for four of them and Stagecoach a replacement for one.
