For the environmental community, the fundamental global climate change challenge is better characterized as an opportunity, one framed by U.S. emissions of carbon dioxide (CO_2) dominated by two obsolete technologies: internal combustion engines in vehicles and coal-fired power plants. Replacements for these technologies are not in the wings—they are on the stage. Our challenge is to gracefully manage ceremonies for their retirement, but it will be no small task.
