German Power-plant Project Begun

A ground-breaking ceremony on August 6 in Geretsried, Germany, marked the beginning of a new German geothermal power-plant project, one of six planned by Enex hf, in cooperation with its German partners. The plant, named Geretsried Nord, will harness geothermal water between 140 to 160℃ to generate 10 to 15 MWe from a binary power plant. At least 30 MW of thermal energy will be used for a district heating system. The six power plants have the potential to generate a total of 60 MWe, besides delivering hot water to district heating systems. The wells will be drilled from 4000 to 5000 m deep. Enex is a conglomerate of the Icelandic energy sector, owned by a group of Icelandic companies and organizations.
