A new milestone was reached by the Australia: geothermal sector in early February, when Panax Geothermal spudded well Salamander 1 in South Australia (see front cover). This is Australia's first dedicated-geothermal well drilled into a Hot Sedimentary Aquifer (HAS) target and the first one close to the main power grid. Progress appeared good during the month, with the hole at 2,800 m after about three weeks.
