A pioneer of geothermal development in Costa Rica, Alfredo Mainieri Protti, has passed away. The story of his working life is the story of geothermal development in Costa Rica—first at Miravalles Geothermal Field and then at Las Pailas. He also undertook other geothermal-exploratory projects throughout the country, always seeking to protect the environment. In 2009,1 asked Dr. Mainieri to explain the success of his country's geothermal projects. He said from the beginning, Costa Rica has based its geothermal decisions on scientific findings. He failed to say he helped to make this decision and made or oversaw many geothermal choices through the years.
