Icelandic Geothermal Workshops

From 12-15th November, four days of intensivepresentations and discussions on geothermalresources took place in Reykjavik, Iceland. AlthoughIceland has a population of only about 350,000,this volcanic island situated on the Mid-AtlanticRidge, just south of the Arctic Circle, is among theworld leaders in geothermal developments. It hasan installed geothermal generating capacity of752 MWe, and 96 percent of its buildings benefitfrom geothermal space heating. Furthermore, atthis meeting a new estimate by ISOR, the IcelandGeosurvey, of its available geothermal reservesindicated that its potential geothermal generatingcapacity is almost 36 GWe.
