Roadway Network Development from the Utopian to the Functional

The history of cities is peppered with reinventions: a hundred or more years ago, we find neighbourhood plans based on ten-minute catchments, gated suburbs for the affluent, cyclists lobbying for better surfaces, aerial transport and underground freight as part of the future of cities. To make sense of this we need to understand the provenance and continuity of these ideas in their historical context.A History of Street Networks is a 'survey history' of the concept of functional traffic separation: primarily about different ways of handling urban road formats to accommodate different modes and speeds of movement, that have shaped the layout of our cities.
