To say that consultants' salaries have suffered the past year would be a statement of the bleeding obvious. The construction industry is still wilting in the shadow of one of the toughest recessions it has ever seen and is in the midst of government cuts, a cull of capital projects and a private sector recovery that won't be anywhere near fast enough to plug the gap left when public sector work falls away. Consultants, like the rest of the industry, have been hit where it hurts - right in the pay packet. But as the job cuts, recruitment freezes and salary reductions roll on through yet another year, the big question is no longer about how much pain there is in the present, but how much can be expected in the future. A future that, if things go on as they are, could be one devoid of young, fresh construction talent.
