Construction is on its way back. Back from the most challenging downturn the industry can remember and moving towards re-establishing itself as a cornerstone of the economy. But the way back will not be easy. The new landscape in which construction is operating has changed out of all recognition. New techniques and new technology demand new skills and a highly qualified workforce. We're in a race for skills. CITB figures show that in the next five years over 180,000 new construction jobs will be created and 120,000 construction apprentices need to be recruited. And this at a time when apprentice numbers have slumped to 8,000 and there is the prospect of over 410,000 members of the workforce retiring in the next 5 to 10 years.
